Preparing for Laser Hair Removal: Why You Shouldn't Pluck or Wax

8/10/2026 · 6 min read

Preparing for laser hair removal: few steps have as much influence on your result as this one. You can choose the best device and the best hands and still waste an entire session if you do the wrong things in the weeks beforehand.

The most common mistake is, of all things, something that feels like thorough preparation: pulling the hair out before your appointment.

That is exactly what this article is about. You will learn why plucking and waxing are counterproductive before a laser treatment, why shaving is not only allowed but actively wanted, and what else matters in the days leading up to your session. By the end, you will know exactly how you should show up for your appointment.

Why plucking and waxing before treatment are a problem

The laser finds its target through the melanin in the hair. The light energy is absorbed by the pigment, converted into heat, and this affects the follicle the hair grows from. But that only works if the hair is actually sitting in the follicle at the time of treatment.

This is precisely where plucking, waxing, threading and epilating become a problem. All of these methods pull the hair out along with its root. What remains is an empty follicle, and an empty follicle has nothing that could absorb the laser energy. In that spot, the treatment simply has no effect until a new hair has grown back weeks later.

That is why professional bodies such as the American Academy of Dermatology recommend stopping waxing and plucking around four to six weeks before your first session. We explain how the laser targets melanin in the first place, and why a true laser works more precisely than an IPL device, in our comparison IPL vs laser hair removal.

Why you should shave instead, and when

Shaving does exactly the opposite of waxing. It removes the hair at the surface but leaves the root untouched inside the follicle. That keeps the target intact for the laser while the long hairs above the skin disappear.

This matters because long hairs on the surface absorb some of the energy unnecessarily and can make the treatment more uncomfortable. So shave the area to be treated around 24 hours before your appointment, not immediately beforehand, so your skin does not enter the session already irritated.

The same rule applies between sessions: shaving yes, plucking and waxing no. You can read how many appointments you should plan for in total, and why the hair cycle dictates the intervals, in our article how many laser hair removal sessions you need.

Sun, self-tanner and why tanned skin often has to wait

Besides the hair, your skin itself plays a role. Freshly tanned or sunburnt skin contains more melanin, and this pigment can draw some of the laser energy to itself instead of leaving it to the hair. That increases the risk of irritation or pigment changes.

So avoid intense sun, tanning beds and self-tanner for a few weeks before treatment. Self-tanner also sits in the uppermost layer of the skin and distorts the assessment of your skin type, which safe settings depend on. If you have just come back from holiday, it is often wiser to postpone the appointment a little than to put your result or your safety at risk.

These products should be paused beforehand

A few days before your appointment, it is worth taking a look at your bathroom shelf. Products containing retinol, fruit acids such as AHA and BHA, or aggressive exfoliants can make the skin more sensitive and increase the risk of irritation. After checking with us, stop using them a few days in advance.

A gentle exfoliation a few days before the session, on the other hand, is helpful, because it loosens dead skin cells, clears the laser's path to the follicle and, as a nice side effect, helps prevent ingrown hairs. Just do not overdo it shortly before your appointment, so the skin stays calm.

Preparing for laser hair removal: what applies to each area

The basic rules apply everywhere, but each area has its own details. For women, this mainly concerns the classic zones of hair removal for women. The intimate area is particularly sensitive, which is why a gentle shave one to two days beforehand matters even more here than elsewhere. On the legs it is more about surface area, so an even shave with no missed spots pays off. The underarms, in turn, react sensitively to deodorant, which you should skip on the day of treatment.

For men, the focus is often the face as well as the chest and back. On the face in particular, you should neither pluck beforehand nor remove individual hairs with tweezers, however tempting that may be.

On the day of treatment

On the day itself, keep it simple. Arrive with clean, dry skin, without cream, oil, deodorant or make-up on the treatment area. These products form a layer over the skin and can interfere with the treatment.

The area should be shaved and the skin calm, not freshly irritated. If you are unsure how the session feels, we have described it in detail in our article does laser hair removal hurt? In short, good preparation is also the best route to a comfortable treatment.
