How Does Laser Hair Removal Work? The Process Explained Simply

How does laser hair removal actually work, and what exactly happens to your skin? If you are considering it but do not really know what to expect, you feel like most people before their first session. The procedure sounds technical, but at its core it is easy to understand.

This article gives you both. First, the simple explanation of what the laser actually does, and then the complete process, from the initial consultation to what you see after treatment. By the end, you will know exactly what you are getting into.

How does laser hair removal work? The short answer

At its core, the principle is simple. The laser emits pulses of light that are absorbed by the colour pigment in the hair. This pigment, melanin, converts the light into heat, and this heat affects the structure in the follicle from which the hair regrows.

Experts call this targeted process selective photothermolysis. The idea is to concentrate as much energy as possible in the hair while protecting the surrounding skin. To protect the surface, the skin is additionally cooled while the energy travels deeper. This is exactly why the treatment is more than simply heating the skin: it precisely targets the right spot.

Light is the active agent, melanin is the target

For this to work, the laser needs contrast. The more pigment there is in the hair and the less there is in the surrounding skin, the more precisely the energy can work. The German Federal Office for Radiation Protection describes exactly this relationship: the procedure responds best when the hair contains a lot of melanin and the skin contains little.

For you, this means two things. Dark, strong hair absorbs the energy most efficiently. And the right wavelength must be selected for your skin type so that treatment remains safe even on darker skin. We explain why a true laser can do this more precisely than a broadly scattering IPL device in our comparison IPL vs laser hair removal.

An honest explanation also includes the limitation. Red, light-blonde, grey and white hairs contain hardly any melanin, which is why the result is significantly more limited there.

Why the hair cycle determines success

One point surprises many people. A single session is never enough, and that is not because of the device, but because of your biology. The laser only works on hairs in their active growth phase, because only these are firmly seated in the follicle and contain enough melanin.

Because only some of your hairs are in this phase at any one time, several appointments spaced a few weeks apart are needed to gradually reach all follicles. You can read how many are realistic in the article How many laser hair removal sessions you need.

This is how your treatment works, step by step

The actual process is more straightforward than many people think. This is what it looks like with us:

  1. Consultation and skin analysis. First, we determine your skin type and hair structure and look at the area you want treated. A short test pulse shows how your skin reacts before we set the parameters.
  2. Preparation. The area is shaved shortly beforehand so that the energy reaches the root instead of dissipating at the surface. You can read what to keep in mind in the days before in the article on preparing for laser hair removal.
  3. The session. You receive protective glasses, then we guide the handpiece over the area. The skin is cooled before every pulse, which makes the treatment extremely low-pain. We describe what this feels like in the article Does laser hair removal hurt?
  4. Immediately afterwards. Slight redness is normal and usually subsides within a few hours. You receive clear aftercare instructions to take home and can generally resume your everyday routine straight away.

How long an appointment takes depends on the area. The upper lip is finished in a few minutes, while larger areas such as the legs take correspondingly longer.

What you can expect after treatment

In the first one to three weeks, the skin gradually sheds the treated hairs. This sometimes looks like regrowth, but it is exactly the opposite.

For the first one or two days, the skin is slightly more sensitive than usual. Avoid saunas, hot baths and intense exercise during this time because additional heat unnecessarily irritates the freshly treated skin. And because the skin reacts more sensitively to UV afterwards, consistent sun protection belongs on the treated area until the irritation has subsided. Usually, nothing more is needed.

From session to session, the hair becomes thinner and lighter. It is important to know that new hairs appear in between because follicles that were previously dormant are only now entering the treatable phase. That is why we speak of permanent hair reduction, an honest term that describes what the procedure can truly achieve.
